Something for Weekend Radio

Christmas and there is too much to do!

Created: 16:33, 13/12/2006

I’m sure life is rather busy for all of you at the moment what with the end of the year coming up and the need to buy presents for people so I’ll use that as my excuse for not having managed to keep up with a number of things that have happened in haemophilia and HIV in November.
Something for the Weekend 3 took place near Derby and was a really enjoyable get together with a number of interesting talks and a great debate. Not often you see the sight of both speakers apparently so convinced by their opponents talk that they vote against their own proposal but that was what we had. And the never to be forgotten sight of Mick so outraged at the vocal and lyrical destruction of a song he liked by the Karaoke singer that he stomped across the dance floor to join in and sing it properly. (And he did) As usual Andy and Pip sang their hearts out to their embarrassed and utterly oblivious respective partners, and three drunken old men shouted their way through the Irish Rover. There should be a report in the next HQ produced by organiser, late night/early morning drinking partner and all round entertainer Richard. Hopefully not mentioning the quality of my singing but be thankful I did not do ‘Paranoid’ again!
Also a programme was broadcast in Radio 4’s Archive Hour about the Living Stories project in their short season of programmes to recognise World AIDS Day 2006. The programme was very impressive looking at the hstory of haemophilia as well as what happened with HIV. It was refreshing to hear a journalist get details about haemophilia right and cover so much ground. My only worry was the rather disconcerting feeling of hearing my squeaky voice much more than I would have liked. Andy also popped up in Paul Gambaccini’s social history of HIV in the UK and nice to know we were not forgotten there.
The British HIV Association had another meeting – they happen every six months –and that was good for stocking up on post-it notes and pens and the odd useful fact about treatment.
Coming up next year is also a large conference for people with HIV in the UK and advertised in the recent issue of positive nation . At the last conference in Leicester there was a good half a dozen people with haemophilia, don’t laugh we could have had a bigger caucus than some of the other groups – as it was we sat in the bar drinking coffee. The last conference was good, well organised and plenty of time for socialising as well as listening to good speakers.
